Most grape varieties used for wine production in Europe are vitis vinifera. In this list of Portuguese and international grape varieties, discover the region of origin and family of each variety. You will naturally find the same variety with different designations, depending on the region.

 

Red Grapes

Red Grapes are planted throughout the Portuguese wine regions. From Castelão to Shiraz and the famous Touriga Nacional, the red grapes have very different leaves, bunches and colours.

The profile of a red wine is heavily defined by the red grape varieties that compose it.

In regions such as Bairrada, it is traditional to use the Baga red grape variety to produce sparkling wines and red wines.

 

White Grapes

White grapes are mainly used to produce white wines. Portugal has a varied composition of white grapes.
