Joana and António Maçanita, brother and sister winemakers, make wines in Douro which reflect the authentic character of this region. These wines convey the different terroirs that the Douro region has on offer. Expressed in their most purest form, free of any bias or prejudice.
These wines reflect the Douro region to its full extent. Maçanita Red and Maçanita White express the varied terroirs of the region. Reserva Red and Reserva White are the essence of the Douro Valley. Finally, Touriga Nacional Cima Corgo and Letra A are two different products of the celebrated Touriga Nacional grape variety, as is our Rosé – its most primary form.
It is through Unique Varieties that these less loved grape varieties come to life in their purest and most accurate shape. Wines that are true to their identity such as Malvasia Fina and Folgasão.
In the plots named Letra F we can find a diverse variety of grapes, planted at high altitude, in the transition from schist soil to granitic soil. In the Douro Valley there are plots more famous that have given the Douro region its fame and prestige, like the Letra A vines, and there are others on the other hand like Letra F that have less demand. This Letra F plots have grapes with less concentration and structure, therefore relatively unpopular. But, there are hidden treasures to be found in Letra F, vines that were planted long ago, thereby confirming the existence of various terroirs in the Douro region.
"I would advise those who wish to plant vines for red wine, to not exclude from it a small portion of White grape varieties (…) for it is a known fact, confirmed by many of high intelect, that red wines which result from the blend of red grapes with a small portion (1/10) of white grapes, are always superior to those made exclusively from red grapes." - Visconde de Villa Maior, 1875, Manual de Viticultura Pratica.
