Sousão is also known in the Vinho Verde region as Vinhão. Sousão is a “tintureira” grape variety.
The pulp is pink, with an extraordinary capacity to release colour from the dark skin into the must where it macerates. It therefore produces wines with an intense colour.
It also has high acidity and low alcohol content, depending on the clone.
Highly planted in the Douro region, where it is part of the typical Port wine blend as it is the colour and freshness element of the blend.
Sousão is also planted in the Vinhos Verdes region and there it assumes the name of Vinhão.
