Concept

Terrantez do Pico is an indigenous grape variety exclusive to the Azores Islands. The last count of vines of this variety, outside the official services trials, was less than 100 plants when António Maçanita decided to get involved in the recovery of this variety. Today it is gradually being replanted which gives hope. This wine demonstrates the potential of this unique grape variety, in this "extreme" volcanic terroir, in a pure, mineral, and saline wine... hoping it will contaminate others to keep it alive.

Tasting Notes

Clean citrus color. Intense floral aroma with notes of tea, bergamot and iodine. The attack is full with a touch of iodine and salt.

Gastronomy

Fresh, with good acidity and some unctuosity, and a great saline component. Works with grilled fish, salads and fresh seafood.

Viticulture

A unique terroir in the world, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, at the base of the Pico volcanic mountain, the vineyards are planted in the crevices of the rock, near the sea, where you can hear the "crab singing", because this is where there is more sun and heat. A proximity of, sometimes, few meters that requires the vineyard to be protected by walls (currais), from the strong and saline winds of the Atlantic.

Vinification

Selective manual harvest to 20kg baske- ts. After sorting table, whole bunch press, natural racking after 12hours and spon- taneous fermentation in 600 to 1000L horizontal stainless steel tanks (60%) and 228L to 500L used French oak barrels (40%).

Storage and Service

Keep at 6ºC to be served at 10ºC, and to drink at 12ºC.
