Wine ID is a winemaking consultancy company set up in 2006 by three winemakers.
Joana Macanita studied agronomy at the Instituto Superior de Agronomia and is a winemaker by profession. She worked in different wineries in Portugal until 2006, when she went to McLaren Vale in Australia, seeking to gain more experience and knowledge in white wines.
When she returned to Portugal, she joined António Maçanita and Cláudia Favinha and they created Wine ID, a winemaking consultancy company. Together, they created the oenology team of the Herdade do Arrepiado Velho, Cem Reis, and Herdade das Courelas projects in the Alentejo. Also in 2009, Joana Maçanita developed the Enogastronomy project for the Restaurant and Bar course, at the Tourism and Hotel School of the Azores.
One year later, Joana Maçanita returns to the Douro to start a new project, R4 Douro Family from Mãos wines, a family with a 150 hectares of vineyards from Baixo Corgo to Douro Superior, and a dream of creating a collaborative wine.
In 2011, she fell in love with the Douro and created Maçanita Wines together with her brother António. At Maçanita Wines, she began a process of understanding the Douro region, or rather, "the different Douros", as she calls it, because she discovered there were many.
Since 2015, she has been releasing wines to the world with portrayals of the Douro's different terroirs, with low interventionist winemaking and a tireless curiosity to discover all the facets of the Douro, Joana Maçanita in the Maçanita Vinhos project has with her brother, has achieved great scores for her wines by the most prestigious magazines in the area.
Two years later, she becomes Project Director of six wine producers in the Algarve region: Cabrita Wines, João Clara, Edd ́s, Quinta do Barradas, Quinta da Malaca and three years later Morgado do Quintão.
The recovery of the Algarve had already been started by colleague and partner Cláudia Favinha. Joana Maçanita had young Algarve projects on her hands that had everything to show for themselves.
She created different wines that showed the facets of the Algarve, the famous Negra Mole in all its forms, summer reds, sparkling, white and rosé. The sea rich Moscatel and the arinto of extremes. She has recently started a project for the restoration of the "Vinhos de Talha do Algarve” (Algarve amphora wines).
In 2013, she was invited by Universidade Lusófona to develop the Enogastronomy curriculum for the Hotel Management course.
In 2016, she launched her book Branco ou Tinto (White or Red) with Presença publishing house, a technical but very practical approach to the world of how to buy, serve, taste and pair wine. A journey through the world of wine for all those who want to better enjoy quality wine. The book was a success, and the critics appreciated the launch of a book that finally uncomplicated the world of wine for everyone.
In 2018, she was nominated for Young Winemaker of the Year by Aníbal Coutinho, and in 2019 nominated Winemaker of the Year by Aníbal Coutinho and Breakthrough Winemaker by Revista de Vinhos magazine.
Joana Maçanita, currently operating in the Algarve and Douro regions, continues to develop her consultancy projects, creating unique products, with soul and personality that tell the story of the land with a modern and current approach.
Son of a father form the Azores and a mother from the Alentejo, António was born in Lisbon, where he studied. In 1997, he enrolled in the Instituto Superior de Agricultura, and in 1999 he fell in love with viticulture with the help of Professor Rogério de Castro.
He went to learn outside Portugal between 2001 and 2004, where he spent time at Chataeu Lynch Bages, Bordeaux, D'Arenberg in Australia and Merryvalle Vineyards, Napa Valley, to name but a few.
When he arrived in Portugal, he met David Booth, a winegrower, they became good friends and started FitaPreta Vinhos. At 24, he made his first Alentejo wine PRETA 2004, which won him a Trophy at the IWC, a trophy previously awarded only once in 23 years of competition. At the age of 25, he was already supporting 4 producers, which have become successful projects, these include Quinta de Sant'Ana, breakout producer in 2012 by Wine magazine, Cem Reis, 5th best Shiraz in the world in 2014 and the prestigious Arrepiado Velho.
He is currently a producer in Alentejo, Azores and Douro and has more than 4 consulting projects between Alentejo and Lisbon.
Winemaker António Maçanita's aim is his quest for authenticity, the recovery of old techniques, the appreciation of the essence of what is Portuguese and the contribution to the regions where his ancestors come from, such as the Alentejo, the Azores and the Algarve. António Maçanita goes on with the intention of contributing to the future and never stopping questioning the "status quo":
We have a saying: if it doesn't give you pleasure doing it, we shouldn't be doing it.
In short, he likes a good challenge, and he already has a few on his hands.
Born in Lisbon in 1977, without any family history in the agricultural or winemaking area, Cláudia Favinha decided to follow Industrial Engineering, believing that she would make yoghurts/cheeses. During the course, she had viticulture classes, which made her think of oenology as a possible option. Cláudia Favinha first interned in one of the oldest and best known companies in Portugal, José Maria da Fonseca.
Not being very satisfied with her academic path, Cláudia decided even before finishing her degree to work in the United States, in the prime Sanoma Valley region, at the Hartfort Court Family Wines winery, where everything she learnt was pivotal to her decision to pursue oenology and to the type of winemaker she is today.
After finishing her course in 2002, Cláudia Favinha went to work in Australia, in the well known region of Ruthergland fortified wines, in the Phiffer Wines winery.
Between 2003 and 2004, she was part of the team (António Maçanita and Frederico Vilar Gomes) that launched a project that is still of note today, Herdade da Malhadinha Nova.
Since 2004, she has been invited to judge the International Wine Challange London and Wine Master Challange Estoril, among other regional competitions.
Between 2005 and 2006, Cláudia Favinha joined Herdade Paço do Conde as resident oenologist under the command of Rui Reguinga and was part of the start-up of WINE ID as consultant for the Algarve region. She is the first female winemaker in the Algarve with this many consultancies and winner of the first Grand Gold Medal of the region by the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles.
From 2003 to 2012, she taught oenology and tasting techniques for hotel groups, private individuals, the Azorean Association for Tourism and Hotel Training and at the Lisbon School of Hotel Management and Tourism.
From 2006 to 2012, she was a consultant for the following projects: Cooperativa de Lagos, Quinta da Vinha – Cabrita Wines, João Clara Vinhos, Quinta do Outeiro – Paxa Wines, Quinta do Francês, Quinta da Malaca, Edd's, Quinta do Barradas and Terras de Cascalhos.
She is currently wine export manager at WINEID.
