Historical Background

The Morgado de Oliveira estate was established in 1306 by D. Martim de Oliveira, Archbishop of Braga, originally from Évora. Here, he cultivated vineyards, built a winery and wine press, implemented protective measures for Évora’s vines and wines, and constructed the Morgado de Oliveira Palace, which today houses the estate. The land is rich in water, with the property’s wells providing water for the historic Água da Prata Aqueduct, purchased by King João II from Morgado de Oliveira at the end of the 15th century. Vine cultivation predates the establishment of the estate, making this one of the oldest recorded vineyard areas in Évora. Chronicles of King João I recount confrontations with Castilian forces here, with soldiers finding refuge among the vineyards.

Location

Historical records indicate that this area is the oldest vineyard region in Évora, a legacy we are proud to honor with this wine.

Vineyard: Morgado de Oliveira

This is the first vineyard planted by António in Alentejo, starting with Arinto grapes, cultivated under organic and dry-farming methods. Despite losing about 30% of the vines in the first year and slow vineyard growth with low yields, António recalls the reward: the first must came with 12.2% potential alcohol and 8 total acidity—a testament to the effort.
Altitude: 307–314 meters

Viticulture

Grapes sourced from the organically grown, dry-farmed Morgado de Oliveira vineyard, planted in 2017.

Vinification

Night harvest by hand, with grape sorting, direct pressing without crushing, and cold settling for 12 hours, with no additives used. Spontaneous fermentation in barrels, without temperature control, allowing both alcoholic and malolactic fermentation to occur naturally.

Aging

Aged on fine lees for 15 months, without battonage, in French oak barrels.

Production

Limited release of 1,919 numbered bottles in March 2024.

Alcohol Content

13% ABV

Tasting Notes

Clear straw yellow color, with an intense nose showing citrus and hints of gunpowder. Full-bodied on the palate, with beautiful acidity and repeating aromas in the aftertaste. Very long finish.

Food Pairing

With concentrated flavors, aromatic intensity, and tertiary notes, this wine pairs well with more elaborate fish dishes, like baked or stewed preparations, or with simple white meat dishes.
