D.O Pico - Azores

Grapes

100% Arinto from the Azores.

Concept

This wine is made from the second pressing of Arinto grapes from the Azores. It combines Sur Lies from the 2024, 2023 and 2022 harvests. The result is a Sur Lies with the texture we are used to, but with a depth and complexity that only time can give!

Arinto dos Açores is a grape variety that is native and exclusive to the Azores islands. This Arinto dos Açores Sur Lies is produced only from the second, heavier pressings, in which the grapes are pressed more, thus contributing more from the skin and consequently more salts and soil salinity. Although considered by most producers to be inferior to the first pressings because they have a lower acidity level and higher pH, here in the Azores we have plenty of acidity to balance the more intense level of the second pressings, further accentuated by fermentation on lees.

Tasting Notes

Straw yellow colour. Pure mineral aroma, citrus with notes of grapefruit, with added complexity from long ageing on lees. Tense, textured but fresh attack with very present minerality and acidity, good persistence and salty and brioche notes.

Viticulture

A terroir unique in the world, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, at the base of the volcanic mountain of Pico, the vines are planted in the crevices of the rock, by the sea, where you can hear the ‘song of the crab’, because this is where there is the most sun and heat. A proximity of sometimes just a few metres means that the vineyard must be protected by walls (corrals) from the strong, salty Atlantic winds.

Vinification

Selective manual harvest in 20 kg baskets, whole bunch pressing, separation of first and second pressings, with only the second pressings being used for this wine. Spontaneous fermentation in horizontal stainless steel vats or used barrels.

Gastronomy

Fresh, very mineral and saline. Ideal partner for oysters, barnacles and bivalves. It also works with grilled fish and more complex fish that involve butter.
