Concept

Jeirão corresponds to the working unit of a vineyard in Pico, encompassing the corrals (walls that protect the vineyards), the passages between them, the canadas and, finally, the place where one turns around, where one turns.
From ‘girão’ it became Jeirão. The first Jeirões are the vineyards closest to the sea, where the sun exposure and the influence of the sea are greater. From ‘girão’ it became Jeirão. The first Jeirões are the vineyards closest to the sea, where sun exposure and maritime influence are most intense.

The elders say that ‘the best vineyards are those where you can hear the crabs singing’. It was here that we planted Verdelho, a grape variety normally grown further from the sea. The result is this: our 1os Jeirões de São Mateus.

Verdelho is a grape variety native to the Azores, distinct from the ‘Verdelhos’ of the mainland and shared with neighbouring Madeira.
